In October 2006, we started an awareness campaign to give people an idea of how to market online. We did this by creating a live website experiment and documenting the entire process. The website started from scratch. Initially, there were no incoming links to the site.

In eight days, we were able to get to the first page of search engines by submitting to online web directories and telling our friends about the new website.

In those eight days the experimental website had 128 unique site visits and 19 sign-ups. That was an astounding 13.76% conversion rate. Almost 1 out of 10 people would sign up. On the Net, a conversion rate of 5% is considered pretty good. To get a 13.76% conversion rate implied that if the website had a 1000 visitors, 137 of them would sign up.
